Native woodland restoration ; yous could be given a few acres to plant/ encourage a woodland (?!) like Bealtaine Cottage 🌱🌳

Hey both, hope you're taking professional advice on the cottage reno. Looking at what was built in 2004 it would appear that the owners were trying to isolate the wet stone walls, hence the extraordinary length they went to. The rendering on the outside with a proper masonry paint will keep the weather completely off the stone. If it's still wet with good rendering outside then it is wicking up water from the ground. The stone/ mortar between is obviously porous. Really you need a damp proof course but it's impossible on this style cottage. The only way to live with bare walls inside and out is to keep the heating on all the time, combustion fires are best since they burn the moisture up the chimney. Also please take a look at Custards Car Port, the posts and joists look too thin, most importantly there is no cross bracing. It could come down like a pack of cards. Love the series, you both bring a whacky sense of humour to what is basically a House reno. There is no other channel like it, I wish you well, keep laughing and success will follow. With the forest gone you will, in a couple of years see a lot of low lying fauna and exposed views. It could be equally as magic

The salt in the wound is that there will be forestry equipment in your back yard for potentially 20 years. 😢

Collect Acorns and plant your own trees - I have some young trees you could have - Chestnut trees - Oak trees - far better than the fir trees for wild life for sure 🌳🌳🌳🌳

It will be hard but your home will still be beautiful and it will work out I just know it. You are so strong. The views will be beautiful once you get used to them. And I think the ideas about making your own native tree border are great. X

Apologies in advance but I wish I had thought of saying that felling is likely soon as it’s a mature plantation. In reality these dense woodlands are pants for the environment. Try connecting with the landowner and convince them that if they are replanting in the future to have a mass off native tree species surrounding your home to make it really great for the future views and wildlife. They have to plant a percentage of native species anyway.

So many trees look dead … major fire hazard ? Look forward to your posts!

Trees are alive and they deserve to live. Scotland needs to stop clear cutting and killing off forests for money. They should be preserving these ancient forests. If they want to plant more trees and add to them, then great. If not, then just leave them be. The older trees actually pass down knowledge to the younger generation of trees. That's definitely something you can research and learn about, to present it to these people who have come by your place in response to your email. Oh, I think a place for a little yard rock waterfall, with a small pool (so the critters can drink from it too) would be calming and serene. Maybe in your section near the deck. It'd make a great spot to sit near, as being near water is so grounding. Doesn't have to be big. You can look up yard waterfalls and get some ideas for something that you may like. The Forrest does look artificial planted in rows and non native species like tall growing trees. It would be great if the area could become preserved and native trees introduced and more wildness as in fallen down trees and little lakes! Forrests are just such a stress reliever!

One thing I would recommending is you can get a render that goes on the front of the house (like you just took off) but they carve a stone looking pattern into this which will match the house etc 🙏🏼 Keep up the good work and graft, if my building company wasn’t based in Essex I would come help!! on the whole breeze block problem, have you thought about putting wood cladding along the breeze block section? the wood would look gorgeous next to the granite walls and it would look like more of a feature rather than having fake granite, which I'm sure you would be able to tell that its not real since it will be right up next to the real stuff, plus it would match the new extension. anywho, love the fab work guys, can't wait to see more! 😍

Definitely plant some native species of trees around your property. It would be lovely. But it’s sad all the same to see the other trees going especially since they were supporting life. Also watch out for rats eating from your bird feeder. It’s super common unfortunately as I discovered. They’ll climb anything to get to food! Best of luck with the renovations 😄

Guys, i am so sorry to hear about your forest but more perturbed that this information was not initially disclosed to you upon the consideration of your purchase of the home/property! I hope you can travel during the times of all the noise during the felling and also, please prepare your property as needed for possible debris slips since the forest and all the mess from chopping is going to go down toward your place! This is the issue with having a plantation next door. It will improve biodiversity cutting them down though since it’s a green desert of mono crop, Sitka spruce I presume. All non native conifers. Not worth chaining yourself to that’s for sure. If you have a meeting with the woodland owner ask if you can buy a chunk of the woodland near the house. Then replant it with native broadleaf trees.

That's a plantation not forest, all the trees are the exact same species and because of that its super dark so lower canopy or no shrubbery can grow. Not wild at all. Its a shame when its cut down they cant replant a mix of tree species to mimic a real and permanent forest, over time this would an amazing habitat for so much wildlife and would be so much more beautiful 😢

@5:18 - you're actually under the sea! When I was a kid we had to drive the whole fjord when going up north, and then the tunnel was built which cut down the time by an hour. In order to pay for the construction, the public had to pay a fee for using the tunnel (those who didn't want to were welcome to take the scenic route through the fjord) and though the company was gonna keep charging for it the public spoke against it. I still remember the first time I drove through and didn't have to pay, I felt like I was breaking the law 😂

I live on the edge of a managed forest. They often thin out the woodland and cut down large areas. These come back quite quickly after replanting and the forest floor comes to life due to the extra light. I know it’s nice to look out onto a forest but sadly you do not buy a protected view when you buy a house. A managed forest being replanted it so much better than a housing estate being built on rolling fields.

You’ll have to throw money at the Forrest. That means owning the land. I really wish that the surrounding areas can remain. Human greed mixed with financial investments do not know you. It’s not that they don’t care. It’s that they cannot profit. I’m sure there’s a creative solution (maybe a small camp) to then help the preservation of the surrounding land. I could be way wrong but really hope that the beautiful scenery and natural resources STAY in your domain. I’m not going to chain myself to a tree though lol. Although I’ve said that to my lady and look at me now! (Just joking!) I’d love to help in any way as I have a bit of knowledge. Love the channel!
